Getting the Most out of Your Online Job Search
by Beverly Cohen, CEC, Contributing Editor

Dismal. That is the first word that comes to mind when I hear anyone mention the current state of the job market. With the unemployment rate reaching staggering heights, it’s important to capitalize on all opportunities. One of the easiest ways to get started is by turning to the web. The trick is knowing where to look and how to market yourself appropriately. Here are
information.

2. Create a new email address with your full name specifically for your job search.
Do away with addresses like funkysister@aol.com or anything too “cutesy”. Your new email will appear
professional and work towards your advantage.

3. When creating your résumé, be mindful that not everyone is working off of the same software you
  are.
What looks perfect on your screen or when you print at home, may come out quite different if your
prospective employer has an older version of the same software. Your best bet is to save your document in
.DOC (Word) format, using a universally accepted font such as Ariel, Helvetica or Times New Roman.

4. Start blogging!
Create a blog about your professional life and area of expertise. This can be a great way to reach a wide
audience. If your blog is written correctly, search engines such as Google and Yahoo! will pick it up and help
extend your reach.

5. The economic downturn we are currently experiencing may be a blessing in disguise.
While it may not feel that way, this may be your opportunity to learn some new skills, which will enhance
your résumé. There are new careers popping up every day as a result of the surge in Internet use and its
widespread availability. Online tutorials are readily available on YouTube and a wide variety of sites,
depending upon your interests.

6. Check out your competition!
Go online and take a look at your competitors. Look at the functionality of their website. Look at their skill-
set. Are your skills in line with today’s job market? Never before has there been an opportunity such as we
have today to actually know our competition in the job market! Use this to your advantage and acquire the
skills necessary to give you that competitive edge.

7. Poll your friends.
Sometimes we work on our Résumé, Blog or Personal Statement so closely we lose our objectivity. Circulate
your work to those you respect and trust for a fresh perspective. Typos and omissions are so common. Spell
check and don’t be afraid of your word processor’s toolbox.

8. Finally, it has never been easier to research your target employer.
Aside from your physical appearance, communication skills and experience be informed about your potential
employer. Look at the Company Website and Blog and find out who they are. This will go a long way toward
making a lasting impression and shows you’ve done your homework.

Be Creative. Luck has nothing to do with it! You can make it happen!

SMART Tips for Taking a Hospital Labor and Delivery Tour
by Dr. Linda Burke-Galloway MD, MS, FACOG

One of the most magnificent moments in a woman's life occurs in a hospital delivery room, yet most women do not take advantage of viewing it in advance. Many hospitals offer free tours of their labor and delivery suites, and expectant families should take full advantage of this opportunity. Gone are the days of steel beds, drab walls and a "ward-type" environment. Most labor and delivery suites offer LDRs (labor, delivery and recovery rooms) equipped with a birthing bed, so mothers can remain in one room during their entire hospital experience. Most LDRs look like master bedrooms, complete with window treatments, flat-screen TVs and Murphy beds for partners or family members.

S = Seek information regarding the nurse-to-patient ratio. The ideal situation is one nurse managing one laboring patient, however, a labor room nurse should never be responsible for more than three patients at one time. Also ask if 24-hour rooming-in of your newborn is allowed or if babies are taken back to the nursery at night.

M = Make certain that you visit the LDRs or birthing rooms, the operating room, the hospital registration office and the nursery. Also inquire about fetal monitors (machines that measure babies' heartbeats and mothers' contractions). Can they be monitored from the nursing station? Can physicians or midwives see them from home on their computers or in the on-call room? Do they have alarm systems that alert hospital staff when a baby's heartbeat becomes abnormal?

A = Ask what kinds of perks the hospital offers, such as a special entrance for mothers in labor, special parking areas or valet parking, rocking chairs or birthing balls in the LDR, or access to high-risk specialists (for example, perinatologists or maternal fetal medicine physicians) in the hospital. Does it have a level 3 nursery or 24-hour anesthesia coverage? What is the visitor policy?
