America’s Economic
Crisis

If you haven’t heard about what is now a global economic crisis then you are living under a rock. A few weeks ago, a shudder ran through most of Wall Street when the U.S. Government announced that it was assuming control of Fannie Mae (The Federal National Mortgage Association) and Freddie Mac (The Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation) to save the ailing financial institutions from bankruptcy and the rest of America from economic meltdown. The same day, Lehman Brothers, another focal financial institution did file bankruptcy and stocks not only shuddered, but plummeted. Merrill Lynch was close to filing bankruptcy but found salvation in Bank of America.
What happened? How did our economy get in such bad shape?
If you blame the war in Iraq, sub-prime mortgages, deregulation and bad credit lending practices you are not incorrect, but it’s more than that. The problem, according to former Democratic Senator Gary Hart is that, America is no longer a producing country (MSNBC, Joe Scarborough's Morning Joe, October 10, 2008).
